Akwaaba in Ghana - My name is Sabine Valentin.

The Africa virus caught me over twenty years ago. I am in Southern Africa, East Africa, as well as traveled in North Africa. 2011, I was for the first time in West Africa, specifically in Ghana to work as a volunteer in an ambulance and inform them about HIV. At the moment I am here for the third time and it will not be the last visit for sure. Meanwhile, I have established a Foundation for the Midnight Sun School Langbinsi eV in Langbinsi in northern Ghana. Here you will find information about us. You are welcome at this school as volunteers teach or assist in the construction of additional classrooms craftsmanship. So you can get to know the best country and its people.

Lots of children's hands want to touch you.

2011 I was one of the first white woman who came to the village. You should have no fear so. Throughout the day you call "white woman: how are you?" In general, the greetings are rather profusely for our circumstances and with praise and compliments is not used sparingly.

Strangers become friends

In Ghana, there is a saying "When you meet a stranger - let him not feel alien to long. Remember, you too can be one of the stranger! "This setting can be felt in the country and this is probably what makes it so enjoyable to be on the road everywhere. The friendly, amiable and lively nature creates a pleasant mood and makes me always warm up heart. The strong faith and hope for a better future to give people here force and even if not everything is perfect, the best is made of it. This has always fascinated me during my time in the clinic and also in the Midnight Sun International School in the village Langbinsi. In Ghana it is the people that make me keep coming back for me.

46 languages and as many tribes

There are 46 languages and as many tribes in the South live longer Christians in the north and more Muslims - the unifying is that they are all very proud of their country and live together openly and peacefully. I was invited too Muslim feasts in the mosque, just bring the Christians at Christmas food to their Muslim neighbors.

Traveling as a woman alone in Ghana

Ghana is often mentioned as a best practice example in Africa, as it is economically and politically stable - as a woman can safely travel alone on the day. My tip - use definitely public transport as Trotros - here you quickly this week! 🙂A challenge in a big city like Accra, it is often that there is no advertised timetables, street name or stop names. At the all lying around black plastic bags and other rubbish I will probably never get used. For many things you need / woman a little more patience. The Trotro (a minibus) only goes as going on when all seats are taken - in the countryside, it may then ever take a little longer. I must confess, however, that I in Ghana in my everyday life relaxed come back after a few weeks and can down Schauben a transition.

What you should definitely in Ghana saw / did?

  • ACCRA the capital, Jamestown, Osu shopping, Artists Alliance Gallery in Labadi
  • CAPE COAST and ELMINA with its massive forts along the Slave Coast
  • CELEBRATE with locals. It's always loud funny, it will dancing, singing and drumming.
  • FUFU eat (kloßförimiges national dish of plantain and yam or Kasava) with a very sharp soup / sauce. Caution: the food is very spicy in general. In Ghana you eat with your right hand - on request you also get enough cutlery amid laughter.🙂

  • To see a drive from the South to the North to all CLIMATES the country.
  • KUMASI incl market visit -. One of the largest markets in Western Africa

Education is the most powerful weapon - who will help with?

Since this week we are also looking for sponsors for the acquisition of school fees and school uniforms for children whose parents can not afford 5 euro / month. Of the school fees books and materials, and the teachers are paid. As has been around Nelson Mandela as pronounced "Education is changing the most powerful weapon the world." You are changing for a single child in Langbinsi / Ghana much if your a standing order about 5 euros with the tag "sponsorship" and your address.
